Interview with Sandrina Fasoli

Sandrina Fasoli's designers explain what's behind their amazing AW collection.

Sandrina Fasoli is the co-founder, with Michael Marson of the brand Sandrina Fasoli. I met Sandrina in Milan a few years ago and I immediately felt in love with her work, her personality and her story. She co-founded the label Sandrina Fasoli in 2003 and the first collection won 2 prizes at the Festival International des Arts de la Mode in Hyères, one of the biggest and most important fashion prizes for new talents. In 2007 Sandrina and Michael were awarded with the Mango Fashion Award and were entrusted with a spring summer 09 co-branded capsule collection for the Spanish brand Mango. Since then their label has been growing and becoming more and more popular, and I am so happy for this, as Sandrina deserves all this success.

Their collections are feminine, pure, rétro and at the same time sophisticated. Sandrina Fasoli's pieces are the classical clothes that you will never get bored of and that can solve a lot of your outfits problems, truly Oh-my-god-I-want-this-in-my-wardrobe pieces.

I am very glad that Sandrina found the time to speak with me about the new Sandrina Fasoli's collection.

This AW collection is one of my favorite Sandrina Fasoli's collection ever. What's the main theme of the collection? Was it inspired by the past?

We were in fact inspired by the past, mostly by the 20’s and the 30’s. The details, the finishing, the falls were so perfect at that time. In our opinion it is the apogee of elegance.
Women of today, their attitude, and the way of making outfits also fascinate us by their nonchalance. It’s a new kind of elegance.

Your creations always express a sophisticated and melancholic woman. How do you express this feeling in this collection?

The colors are always connected together, creating a soft and tender feeling. There is a touch of feminity in every outfit we make but always with a huge subtlety.

So, how important are materials and colors in this collection?

The fabrics are as important as the volumes in our collections. We like to use fabrics with "false impression", for example a jersey which visually is completely the same as leather but with an incredibly softness and a fluidity. We had a camel silk that was silver inside. When you roll up your sleeves our bottom of trousers, it’s amazing. We like beautiful materials but not too fragile.
The colors are also very important; they define the mood of the collection and also how it will place in the time.

What's the key piece of the collection?

By making this collection, we kept in mind Belle de jour by Luis Bunuel and his feminine universe today, a middle-class woman with her ambiguous. The dresses are very important because they reflect the informal elegance, the nonchalance in the feminity.

When you create a collection where do you start from? An icon, a texture or just a vision?

We begin with feelings. It’s the phase that I prefer. We search for images, from films, photography, art. It’s a very enriching period because we discover a lot of different things. Then, we share our sensation, our desire for the season. The drawings come after.

Let's talk about your AW campaign. It was shooted by  two of the most important fashion photographers, Benjamin Travade & Benoit Bethume. Where did this collaboration start from?

We know Benoit Bethume for a while because he was also at La Cambre. We follow his job from the beginning because we really like it. He is so gifted. Avant-Garde and into the past.  It’s the 4th season that we work together on the campaign. He proposed us Benjamin Travade as photographer 2 seasons ago. It was a big encounter, on a professional plan and on the human plan. They both are extremely professional and so nice too.

Now we are totally fascinated, so where can we find your collections? Do you have an online store?

We have our flagship store in Brussel. We are sold in around 40 multi-brand stores in Belgium, Europe, Japan and Saudi Arabia. You can find the list of all ours resellers in our website and Facebook page. We don’t have any online store but we used to sell online with our own shop. You can find our collections in ours reseller's online shop though.

In the end a suggestion for the winter wardrobe: what's the must have for this season?

Colette, a fitted jacket made in super shiny black simili-leather.
