If you are not Italian or a theatre lover, you probably don't know who she was. But I think everyone should, because she was a great person and a great woman, who has a lot to teach to everyone. That is why I decided to write this post to remember her.
Ho deciso di scrivere questo post dedicato a Franca Rame perché penso che tutti dovrebbero conoscere almeno un po' della sua storia. È stata una grande persona e una grande donna, che ha tanto da insegnare a tutti.
Her name was Franca Rame and she died yesterday in Milano, she was an actress, the wife of a Nobel prize winner, a writer and most of all she was a woman that always fought for women's rights and for what she believed in.
She was born in a family of actors, she was funny, smart and really beautiful but she decided not to became one of those soubrette who were so popular at that time. She decided to use the theatre to communicate her ideas and, in the seventies, she was one of the most important political actress and writer in Italy. Together with her husband Dario Fò she presented on stage an information against the catholics governments that we had in Italy during those years. She was part of the feminist movement and she took position on really controversial political cases. And she didn't do it just with words.
In 1973, because of her ideas, she was kidnapped, beat, raped and abandoned in the middle of nowhere by a band of 5 guys from the neo-nazi Italian party. She was punished as a symbol of feminism and for her political position; she suffered the most atrocious physical and psychological torture that a woman can imagine but she didn't stop. She didn't hide herself, even if she declared that for several years after the ambush she didn't dare to walk anywhere by herself, she didn't shut up but she used that experience to help the other women and to teach them how to go on. She wrote a monologue called "Lo Stupro" (The rape), she presented it in the theaters and during the most popular prime time tv-show at the time, forcing the public opinion to talk about a subject that was a taboo.

Franca Rame era un'attrice, la moglie di un premio Nobel, una scrittrice ma soprattutto era una donna che ha sempre lottato per i diritti delle donne e per le sue convinzioni.
È nata in una famiglia di attori, era intelligente, simpatica e bella, avrebbe facilmente potuto fare carriera nell'avanspettacolo, ma decise di non diventare una soubrette ma di utilizzare il teatro per esprimere le sue idee politiche. Negli anni 70 diventò una delle attrici e scrittici di teatro satirico e politico più importanti d'Italia, i suoi spettacoli di denuncia insieme a Dario Fò sono leggendari. Era impegnata nel movimento femminista e ha preso posizione riguardo a situazioni spinose, come il caso Pinelli. E il suo prendere posizione non era fatto solo di parole.
Nel 1973, a causa delle sue idee, fu sequestrata, malmenata e stuprata da un gruppo di 5 giovani dell'estrema destra neonazista. Fu punita come simbolo del femminismo e per le idee che andava professando così apertamente, fu punita per quello in cui credeva. Ma, anche dopo essere stata la vittima di una delle torture peggiori che una donna possa immaginare, non si è mai fermata. Non si è mai nascosta, anche se dopo tempo ha dichiarato che per diversi anni dopo l'agguato non ha avuto il coraggio di andare in giro da sola, non ha taciuto, ma ha usato la sua arte per esorcizzare quell'esperienza e per aiutare le altre donne ad affrontarla. Ha scritto un monologo "Lo Stupro" che ha presentato in giro per i teatri e che ha scandalizzato Fantastico nel 1981, costringendo l'Italia intera ad interrogarsi su di un argomento taboo.
