Alexander Wang for Balenciaga: fashion pas faux?

Drumrol, please: Alexander Wang's first collection for Balengiaga.

One of the hottest catwalk in Paris this February was for sure Balenciaga's one. Everyone was waiting for the first collection of the 29 years old American Alexander Wang, the first one in the post-Nicolas Ghesquière. I must admit that Wang's task was really hard, presenting something after years of Ghesquière's pure imaginative fashion, beloved by buyers, customers and press, in one of the most posh maison in Paris, is not something that everyone would be willing to do. The pressure was high, maybe too high as, in his first try, Wang didn't meet my expectations.

His first collection, presented Thursday morning in the intimate salon on avenue George V was far away from the explosive power of Raf Simon's first creations for Dior and miles away from the snobbish taste of Hedi Slimane for Yves Saint Laurent, ops for Saint Lauren Paris as monsieur Slimane renamed the maison. Wang's collection was too precise, with too many references to Cristòbal Balenciaga's style and so connected to the roots of the brands that seemed like a tribute to me. I didn't see any of  Wang's sporty-high-street touch in the black and white outfits that walked down the catwalk, but exceptionally well made cocoon jackets, small blazers with round volumes, cigarette pants. It was all about the fabrics and nothing else.
Wang didn't take the risk at all, that is what disappointed me. I hope he will at least try with the next collections, to paraphrase a famous quote "Paris is well worth a risk".
